The other day I took a golf lesson from our pro. What I didn’t know was that he was going to give me a lesson on life! He asked me to hit a couple of balls - which I did (pretty well, I thought). He asked me if I really wanted to improve my golf swing. Yes, I said. Then he gave me the first life lesson - “OK, if you really want to - we are going to have to start all over”. “All over?” I said. Yes. Wow, it was incredibly uncomfortable. I hit one left, one right, swung and missed; finally I hit a good one. It was uncomfortable, embarrassing, and disconcerting.
Life lesson: whenever we have our fundamentals challenged we are going to feel all that and more.
As I “mastered” the first change (the grip), he asked if I was ready for another. Another? Another trip into the unknown, uncomfortable, embarrassing, disconcerting… Yes, I said. “too much left hand”, said Barry. “That is really hard to change - do I have to?”, I asked. “Only if you want to get better”, was his response.
I went to a qualified mentor. Someone who knew and practiced more than I about golf. I believe there is a life lesson in that as well. Why are we so quick to take advice from our neighbors and friends if they have do not have the expertise or knowledge to give us the advice that they are giving?
Isn’t that like life? We want to do it the old and comfortable way. We don’t realize sometimes that we have to be inconvenienced, embarrassed, and uncomfortable to get better. Ask yourself the following question- “do you really want to improve your life?”
If the answer is yes- let’s start all over from scratch, build on what is working and not on what is not. I understand that the Armed Forces use this strategy as well. Tear down everything so that they can build on a more solid foundation. We should take a lesson from Barry and the Armed Forces!
